Ship Creek is one of my favorite places in Anchorage because it offers something for everyone. 

Located just a few blocks from downtown Anchorage, Ship Creek is unlike anywhere else in the world. It's widely recognized as the world's only urban king salmon fishery, where anglers can catch Alaska salmon with office buildings, hotels, and the Alaska Railroad just steps away.

Where Anchorage Began

Long before Anchorage became Alaska's largest city, Ship Creek was the place where it all started.

In 1915, a tent city was established near the mouth of Ship Creek to house thousands of workers building the Alaska Railroad. As the railroad expanded, the settlement moved to the bluffs just south of the creek and eventually grew into the City of Anchorage.

Long before the arrival of the railroad, however, this area was home to the Dena'ina Athabascan people. They knew the creek as Dgheyaytnu, and the surrounding lands had been used for generations as an important travel and fishing area.

Ship Creek also played a role in American history. In July 1923, President Warren G. Harding arrived at the Ship Creek rail station to celebrate completion of the Alaska Railroad during the famous Golden Spike ceremony. It was one of the final public appearances of his presidency before his death just a few weeks later.

Today, visitors standing beside Ship Creek are standing where modern Anchorage was born.

The World's Only Urban King Salmon Fishery

Ship Creek has become famous for something few cities can claim.

Every summer, king and coho salmon return to these waters only blocks from downtown hotels, restaurants, and office buildings, creating one of Alaska's most unique fishing opportunities.

The fishery is supported by annual releases from the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery, helping sustain healthy runs of hatchery-raised king and coho salmon while providing excellent fishing opportunities for both residents and visitors.

It's one of the few places in the world where you can spend the morning exploring downtown Anchorage and the afternoon catching a salmon.

You Don't Have to Fish to Enjoy Ship Creek

One of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors is that Ship Creek is entertaining even if you never pick up a fishing rod.

Spend an hour walking along the creek and you may see:

  • Anglers landing king or silver salmon
  • Bald eagles soaring overhead
  • Harbor seals chasing salmon into the creek
  • Alaska Railroad trains arriving and departing
  • Local photographers capturing the action
  • Visitors from around the world experiencing Alaska fishing for the first time

During the peak salmon runs, there's almost always something happening.

We rent fishing gear all summer long to visitors who decide to try their hand at catching a king or a coho. Its only $25/day and $10/day for kids, so a great opportunity to get on the river. 

Wildlife Along the Creek

Ship Creek offers excellent wildlife viewing right in the heart of Anchorage.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Bald Eagles
  • Harbor Seals
  • King Salmon
  • Silver Salmon
  • Ducks and other waterfowl

Wildlife activity changes throughout the summer, making every visit a little different.

After spending time at the creek, I always recommend stopping by The Bridge Seafood Restaurant.

Perched above Ship Creek, it offers beautiful views overlooking the water while serving fresh Alaska seafood and one of Anchorage's favorite all-you-can-eat salad bars.

Whether you're watching anglers below, hoping to spot a harbor seal, or simply enjoying lunch with family, it's one of the most relaxing places to spend an afternoon near downtown. Open Friday through Monday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Ship Creek is located only minutes from downtown Anchorage and is easy to reach on foot, by bicycle, taxi, or rental car.

Many visitors combine Ship Creek with:

  • Downtown Anchorage shopping
  • The Alaska Railroad Depot
  • The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail
  • Nearby breweries and restaurants

Whether you spend thirty minutes or half a day, Ship Creek is one of the easiest and most rewarding stops in Anchorage.
