Kenai Fishing Report

July 3, 2026
With the closure of Ship Creek until July 14, head to the Kenai Peninsula. Sockeye fishing continues to be excellent on the Russian and Kasilof Rivers, and rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai River remains productive between salmon runs. Flossing is the technique to use on those rivers and we give you a lesson when you rent your gear.
This Week's Highlights from Alaska Fish and Game
Russian River:
- Early-run sockeye are in strong shape.
- The weir count hit 37,951 fish through July 3, comfortably within the biological escapement goal of 22,000–42,000. Because that goal was projected to be met, ADF&G issued an early opening with increased bag limits for Russian River and the Upper Kenai, in effect June 25 through July 14, 2026.
- This is prime time — the Russian is famous for "combat fishing" at the confluence with the Kenai, meaning elbow-to-elbow crowds during peak sockeye weeks. Reviewers consistently flag two things: the shoulder-to-shoulder fishing pressure, and very frequent bear activity (both brown and black bears work the banks for salmon), so bear awareness is a real part of the experience, not just a formality.
Kasilof River:
- King salmon fishing is now closed.
- Also having a standout sockeye season: 2025's final count topped 1.19 million (for comparison), and 2026 web reports describe the run as "stronger than expected" with counts already exceeding 420,000 reds by early July, a record pace.
- ADF&G raised the daily sockeye bag limit from 3 to 6 (12 in possession) effective June 26 due to the strong return; coho limits are unchanged at 2/day.
- Sockeye fishing continues to improve, with anglers regularly catching limits.
Kenai River:
- King salmon fishing is closed because the preseason king forecast was only 2,325 large fish, well under escapement goals.
- The upside is Sockeye: the 2026 forecast is roughly 4.45 million fish, above both the historical and 10-year averages, with the second (main) run typically peaking July 15–28 — those two weeks are booked out by guides 6-9 months ahead.
- Sockeye and Upper Kenai bag limits are increased through July 14 (same order as the Russian River). Guide reviews for Kenai River outfits are strongly positive, with repeated praise for guides' local knowledge given how much the river channel shifts year to year.
- Rainbow trout fishing has been very good. Leeches, flesh flies, and beads continue to produce fish.
Local Stocked Lakes
If you're looking for an easier day of fishing or introducing someone new to the sport, local stocked lakes continue to fish well.
- Sport Lake (Soldotna)
- Johnson Lake (Kasilof)
- Summit Lake (Turnagain Pass)
- Crescent Lake for Arctic Grayling
Seward Report
The Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon king salmon run has slowed, but anglers continue to catch fish both inside the lagoon and along the outside shoreline during incoming tides.
Best Baits:
- Salmon roe under a bobber
- Herring
- Spinners
⚠️ Closures & Emergency Orders
These rivers are heavily managed for obvious reasons with several active emergency orders, so it's worth checking ADF&G's Northern Kenai report and the specific EO numbers before heading out, since bag limits and closures are shifting through the season.
- Anchor River and Deep Creek sport fishing restrictions
- Cook Inlet king salmon restrictions
- Ninilchik River king salmon restrictions
- Cook Inlet razor clam permit requirements
We'll update this report every Friday throughout the fishing season with the latest conditions from the Kenai Peninsula.
