Quick Takes

Bear spray only works if you can reach it immediately. The most common mistake visitors make is storing it inside a backpack.

Carry bear spray in a belt holster or chest holster where it can be drawn quickly with one hand. That's exactly what Paul demonstrates in the video below.

If you're planning to hike, fish, camp, photograph wildlife, or simply explore Alaska's incredible outdoors, bear spray should be part of your essential gear.

While most bears want nothing to do with people, surprise encounters can happen quickly; especially near salmon streams, thick brush, or around blind corners on hiking trails.

In this short video, Paul demonstrates how to use bear spray and explains why accessibility is one of the most important parts of bear safety.

Hiking, Fishing, Camping and Wildlife Viewing

In Alaska, always assume there will be a bear on or near where you are.  Even if you are hiking in an urban area like Anchorage, bear can be around the next bend.

Salmon streams naturally attract bears as it is their  primary food source.  If you're fishing along Alaska's rivers, carry bear spray. Keep bear spray available around camp, especially when walking away from your campsite or exploring nearby trails. Seeing a bear is exciting, but Always maintain a safe distance and carry bear spray.

Prevent Bear Encounters

Bear spray should always be your last line of defense. The best encounter is the one that never happens.

  • Make noise when hiking, especially near rushing water or thick brush.
  • Travel with friends whenever possible.
  • Watch for fresh tracks, scat and other signs of bear activity.
  • Keep food, garbage and scented items properly secured.
  • Never approach bears for photographs.
  • Give every bear plenty of room to move away naturally.
