Popular Hiking Trails Near Anchorage
When we aren't fishing, we're hiking.
So we thought we would add a few of the Anchorage hiking highlights and our rating on whether its good for families or just experienced hikers. Whether you're looking for a short walk or a challenging mountain climb, Anchorage offers hiking opportunities for every ability level.
Flattop Mountain
Best For: First-time visitors and panoramic views
We took our kids up here the first time when they were 4 and 6, so it just fine for kids--provided you aren't in a hurry.
Flattop is Anchorage's most famous hike—and for good reason. Located just 20 minutes from downtown, the trail climbs above the city to spectacular views of Cook Inlet, the Chugach Mountains, and, on exceptionally clear days, even Denali can sometimes be seen on the horizon. The final scramble to the summit is steep but manageable for most hikers.
- Distance: 3.4 miles round trip
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Time: 2–3 hours - More with little tykes.
Go early in the morning or later in the evening for easier parking, cooler temperatures, and the best views.
Byron Glacier Trail
Best For: Families and glacier views
Located in scenic Portage Valley about an hour south of Anchorage, Byron Glacier Trail is one of Alaska's easiest and most rewarding hikes. The wide gravel trail leads through beautiful mountain scenery to the face of Byron Glacier, making it an excellent choice for visitors of all ages.
- Distance: 1.4 miles round trip
- Difficulty: Easy
- Time: About 1 hour
Even on warm summer days, the air near the glacier can be surprisingly chilly. Bring a light jacket.
Thunderbird Falls
Best For: Families, waterfalls, and quick hikes
If you're short on time but still want a memorable Alaska hiking experience, Thunderbird Falls is hard to beat. A short forested trail leads to a viewing platform overlooking a dramatic waterfall cascading into the canyon below.
- Distance: 1 mile round trip
- Difficulty: Easy
- Time: 30–45 minutes
This is one of my favorite hikes to recommend for families. It's close to Anchorage, easy to walk, and everyone enjoys the waterfall.
Rabbit Lake Trail
Best For: Alpine scenery
Rabbit Lake Trail offers one of Anchorage's classic alpine hikes. The trail climbs gradually through the foothills before reaching a beautiful mountain lake surrounded by rugged peaks. Wildflowers bloom throughout the summer, and berry patches often line the trail later in the season.
- Distance: 8.7 miles round trip
- Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
- Time: 4–6 hours
Bring plenty of water and take your time. This hike is all about enjoying the journey as much as the destination.
Bird Ridge Trail
Best For: Experienced hikers only - not for the faint of heart
Don't let the relatively short distance fool you—Bird Ridge climbs quickly and rewards hikers with breathtaking views overlooking Turnagain Arm and the surrounding Chugach Mountains. This is one of the area's most challenging day hikes and is best suited for experienced hikers in good physical condition.
- Distance: 4 miles round trip
- Difficulty: Challenging
- Time: 3–5 hours
Take your time on the climb and bring more water than you think you'll need. The views at the top are worth every step.
