For 32 years, 6th Avenue Outfitters provided the kind of customer service only available from Alaskans serving Alaskans. When its owner Larry died in 2017, instead of closing the shop, Larry wanted the store converted to a cooperative (like REI) so Alaskan owners could share in ownership benefits, like immediate discounts off retail prices and special member-owner deals throughout the years. So, in April 2018, 6th Avenue Outfitters became 6th Avenue Outfitters Cooperative, Inc., Alaska's first and only retail cooperative.
Recognizing Rural Alaska’s important role in keeping 6thAvenue Outfitters in business for 32 years, the Co-op created a special level of membership for Alaskan Villages that allows the Village to extend its 15% membership discount off retail prices to its entire community. Village membership costs only $50, but can save their communities thousands on goods purchased each year.
The ability to purchase goods COD continues to have an important role in Alaska. Unfortunately, the Postal Service has increased its COD fees substantially over the years, and we sometimes see that UPSP fees cost more than the goods our customers are purchasing. So, the Co-op allows residents of Co-op Owner Villages to receive 15% discount for COD purchases, which helps offset the high UPSP COD fees. COD costs us the Co-op more, because of the time delay in being paid for the goods and the frequency of returned packages, but we believe it is an important service to continue for our Co-op Village Members.
Our letterhead proudly lists the Villages that are already Co-op Owner-members whose community residents receive 15% discounts off retail prices every single day of the year.
We hope your village considers joining the Co-op and allowing your community to benefit from great gear at reasonable prices. Joining the co-op is easy, you can send a check for $50 to 6thAvenue Outfitters, you can join right here online online.
